Pain significantly impacts quality of life. When pain persists for more than three months, even after the underlying cause has been addressed, it is referred to as chronic pain. This is often caused by an overly sensitive nervous system.

Chronic pain is complex and requires equally flexible therapy. Since it is frequently triggered by a hypersensitive nervous system, tailoring the treatment to the ever-changing symptoms is essential. The goal is to sustainably improve the quality of life for those affected.

What is a

  • Chronic pain syndrome?
  • Pain is the predominant symptom – the primary indicator of discomfort. Chronic pain refers to pain that has been present almost constantly or frequently recurring for at least three to six months, significantly impacting the patient physically (loss of mobility, functional limitations), cognitively (well-being, mood, thought processes), and socially. Persistent pain signals can make nerve cells increasingly sensitive to new stimuli, meaning the pain threshold lowers over time. This creates 'pain pathways' and a 'pain memory.' In some cases, even the slightest stimuli or mere touch can be perceived as pain. Occasionally, nerve cells may even send pain signals to the central nervous system on their own, even though the original cause of the pain (such as an injury) has long since healed. Thus, pain persists even when there is no longer an organic cause.

Risk factors

  • -Persistent psychovegetative tension (constantly feeling 'on edge') -History of anxiety and depression -Past experiences of prolonged stress or pain -Family members or close associates with chronic pain -Tendency toward 'catastrophic thinking' -Consistently ignoring personal limits – pushing through regardless -Fear-avoidance beliefs – avoiding movement and physical activity -Inadequate pain treatment when the pain first began -Avoiding discussions about pain -Family conflicts -Environmental stressors (e.g., workplace issues) or financial difficulties

Treatment

  • How are chronic pain treated?
  • It is now widely accepted that chronic pain is not solely a physical condition but also involves significant psychological and social factors. Often, chronic pain is accompanied by sleep disturbances, fatigue, reduced performance, and mood swings, including depression. These symptoms can be both a cause and a consequence of the pain, contributing to its chronic nature. Therefore, a holistic treatment approach that addresses both physical and psychological aspects is crucial. The treatment of chronic pain encompasses a wide range of measures, including: -Medication therapy with pain relievers and certain mood-stabilizing drugs. -Non-pharmacological approaches such as massages, cold and heat therapies, exercise therapy, nerve stimulation, and acupuncture. -Psychological therapies aimed at alleviating chronic pain.
