It is one day that changes everything. Maybe one last trip to the veterinarian. The empty space on the sofa. The silence, if otherwise there was a tapping of the paws or a familiar breathing in the room. You may notice that this loss hits you more than you expected, and at the same time you hear other phrases like "it was just an animal" or "you can just get a new one." Exactly these sentences make much more difficult, because they pretend that your grief is too great for their occasion.
I offer companionship for people who have lost an animal. Whether you have been together for many years or only for a short time, does not matter. It is true love that connected you. And where this deep connection was, now the grief can be exactly as it feels to you.
I know that the loss of an animal is not a minor loss just because it is still treated that way by many. An animal can mean everyday life, structure, proximity and reliability for years, often in a way that can hardly be put into words, precisely because it was never associated with language. When this beloved being is missing, often a whole part of our universe is missing, not just an opposite.
With me, you do not have to justify your grief and do not put it in relation to "larger" losses. There is no order of precedence for me, which loss deserves more grief. Perhaps we are talking about feelings of guilt in connection with a decision on euthanasia. Perhaps the feeling that no one around you understands why you suffer so much. Perhaps also simply about how everyday life now looks like when your counterpart and the associated usual handles, feeding times or walks suddenly run empty.
This companion can suit you, whether it is a dog, cat, horse or other animal that has meant a lot to you. It can fit when the loss has just happened, and also when it has been a long time ago, but you realize that something has not yet found its place. It can also fit if you work in a profession where the death of animals is part of your everyday life, such as veterinary medicine or animal care, and your own exhaustion is often overlooked.
I also lost animals that were by my side for many years. I know the feeling that a home suddenly sounds different because a certain sound is missing that was taken for granted for years. And I also know the slight doubt whether one can mourn "as" as one is doing.
This is precisely why, in addition to my practical work, I am also involved in networks such as animàdieu, because animal mourning still receives too little space in many areas, including veterinary medicine itself. For me it is clear: a life that was closely interwoven with yours for years leaves a real gap, no matter how many legs it was on.
