Farewell without death: When grief comes anyway

There are goodbyes that feel like a small death – even if no one has died. Maybe you know this: A relationship ends, a job is lost, a friend moves away, or you have to say goodbye to a stage of life that meant a lot to you. The grief that comes then is often difficult to grasp. It is there, but somehow the "permission" to really feel it is missing. "No one died," many say. But it still hurts.

In my practice, I have accompanied many people who have lived through exactly this. One of them, let’s call him Michael, once said to me, I didn’t know I could be so sad just because something had changed. It feels like I’m losing myself. Michael had lost his job, a job that was not only work for him, but also identity and security. His grief was real, even if it did not cause death.

Why is it so hard?

Farewells without death are often fraught with shame. "I should be glad it’s over," a client who had split after a toxic relationship told me. "But why do I feel so empty?" This emptiness, this grief, is often difficult to explain – especially to others. While death is socially recognized as a "legitimate" reason for grief, other losses are often trivialized. "Don’t act like this", "Life goes on", "You already find something new" – many hear such sentences. And yet the pain is deep.

The body and psyche often react to this type of loss similar to the death of a loved one: sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating, a feeling of numbness or even sudden bursts of anger. "I was so tired, but I couldn’t sleep," another client told me, who struggled with her grief after moving to a new city. And then that anger came—on me, on the world, on everything.

A way out of grief

Grief needs space. No matter if it is triggered by a death or another farewell. In my practice, I work with different methods to help people create this space.

One example is Julia, who was stuck in an emotional hole for months after her separation from her partner. "I didn’t know how to get out of there," she said. I felt so lost. Together we have ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) Worked. It is about accepting the feelings without evaluating them – and at the same time taking small steps to find life again. "It helped me accept that it’s okay to be sad," Julia said later. "And yet I learned not to let grief define me."

"Sometimes it’s enough to just talk about it," a client who came to me after losing his company told me. But not everyone wants to hear that. Here I could let everything out without being condemned.

Relieving the Body and Psyche

"I always had such a pressure on my chest," one client told me, who struggled with a feeling of emptiness after moving out of her adult children. Through body therapy, I have learned to feel this pressure and slowly let it go.

It's really okay not to be okay

Farewells without death are often invisible. But they're real. And they deserve to be mourned. Whether it’s a breakup, a job loss, a move or just the end of a life phase – the pain is legitimate.

"I learned that grief is not a sign of weakness," Michael told me at the end of our work together. It was a sign that something was important to me. And that's actually something beautiful.
