When Quitting Is the Next Step

Sometimes going on feels hard, not because you are weak, but because you have been wearing for a long time. Much endured, taken on responsibility, works, taken together. And at some point something quietly reports and says: This is not the way for me anymore. This is not a dramatic moment, but rather a silent one. One who does not push outwards, but pulls inwards and who has often been ignored for a long time.

Quitting is not giving up

Stopping quickly sounds like failure or retreat in our world. Quitting is often something completely different. It's not running away, it's stopping. No giving up, but a moment of clarity that creates space for honesty towards oneself. Not everything that ends has failed. Some things have simply done their service.

Standing still as a conscious moment

Standing still is not standing still. It is a conscious arrival in the now, a breathing, a dignification for what has already been accomplished. Even if no one saw it. And even if it has not felt like something special for a long time. This moment is not about deciding something, but about being there. With itself.

"I can’t continue like this"

Many people come to my practice at this point. They don't say, I want to stop. They say rather: I cannot continue like this. And in this sentence lies no capitulation, but often for the first time a cautious loyalty to oneself. It is the moment when the inner drive becomes quieter and something else becomes audible. Not clear, but honest.

Stop instead of immediate solutions

Stopping does not mean having to throw everything out or force decisions. It means not to drag on for a moment, not to optimize more and not to immediately seek the next solution. It means recognizing yourself with what is tired, with what doubts, and with what may have been asking for attention for a long time. This is unusual and also unsettling for many.

The courage to meet yourself

This step takes courage, often more than continuing. Because in pause, there's less distraction. No speed that covers. No task list that protects. You meet yourself more directly, and that can be challenging. At the same time, there is often something relieving here. Not because suddenly everything becomes easier, but because nothing more has to be ignored.

A room for a yes to yourself

A conscious pause can be a first yes to yourself. No big, no final, rather a cautious one. One that says:

I can listen.

I can take what appears seriously.

For this, there is no need for a plan or a goal, only a space in which standing is allowed. In which nothing has to be evaluated and in which sorting becomes possible without having to justify itself.

What shows up instead

Many do not experience immediate relief at this stage, but something else that is often more sustainable. More ground under your feet. More contact with yourself. A quiet sense of coherence, even if it is not yet clear how to proceed. Not as a solution, but as a beginning.

You don't have to prove anything

You don’t have to prove anything to be right here. You don’t have to break down to be taken seriously. It is enough that you feel that it is time to find a different way. One that does not exhaust you further.
